Merle Travis fick 1947 en hit med en sång som hämtade sitt innehåll från kolgruvearbetarnas liv i Kentucky. Han spelade in låten på Capitol 48001. Här är den text han sjöng in:

Det har sjungits in varianter av den här sången, och på 1960-talet gjorde en före detta kolgruvearbetare, George Davis, också anspråk på att vara den som ursprungligen skrev sången.

Bland dem som tidigt sjöng in ”Sixteen Tons” fanns andra amerikanska sångare och sånggrupper på vänsterkanten, till exempel Big Bill Broonzy och The Weavers. Senare har också till exempel Johnny Cash och Tom Jones haft framgångar med sången. Men den som här i Sverige hade störst framgång med den, 1955, var Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Det var väl också han som lockade Cacka Israelsson att 1956 sjunga in en svensk textversion, ”Sexton ton”, av ”Sixteen Tons”. Den svenska texten skrevs samma år av signaturen Ninita (= Ingrid Reutersköld).
