Rebel Jesus

De kanadensiska systrarna Kate och Anna McGarrigle, som jag nyligen skrev om, är ju – trots att en av deras sånger på svenska blev ”Ingen kommer undan politiken” – inte kända främst för politiskt engagemang, och i deras fall är det kanske inte så förvånande, att de har gjort en julskiva, ”The McGarrigle Christmas Tour” (Nonesuch 79925-2, 2005, distribution Warner); jag fick den i julklapp av Anna, märkligt nog utan något som helst samband med att jag har skrivit om systrarna McGarrigle – Anna hade beställt den för nästan ett år sen.

Till det yttre skulle den kunna vara en svensk julskiva: med snöhöljda berg och skogar, med skidspår och slädfärd. Men där finns mer än engelskan (en låt görs också på franska) och countrystuket i den avslutande ”Blue Christmas” som får en svensk lyssnare att förstå, att här finns en kulturskillnad. Sångerna – nya så väl som gamla – ger uttryck för en religiös innerlighet som får mig att ana, att det åtminstone i delar av Kanada finns en befolkning med en lika fast förankrad tro som den som jag har hittat i USA. Egentligen är det bara en låt som sticker ut lite grann:

Skivan innehåller solonummer; som gästartist uppträder i ett sådant fall – ”O Little Town of Betlehem” – Emmilou Harris. Men egentligen är CDn musikaliskt bäst i de fall, där det förekommer stämsång av det slag som vi förknippar med systrarna McGarrigle.

På den här CDn sjunger för övrigt inte bara de utan nästan hela klanen: Kates och Loudon Wainwrights son Rufus Wainwright respektive dotter Martha Wainwright, Annas man Dave Lanken och deras dotter Lily Lanken.
